Years in IT—
My first mainframe job—
The Australian Bureau of Census and Statistics. I remember my first day in the office, the first task I was assigned by my new boss (I was barely 19 years old), he said "Go across the road to the mall and get me a Kebab." A fine introduction to the ways of the large-scale computing world of the 1980s in Australian Government. :-)
My favorite mainframe or memory—
The Gnomes of IBM: the day in IBM Global Services Australia where the decree came down from executives above that no one was to have more than two gnomes on their desk at any time. This happened because a local exec had been embarrassed in front of a visiting exec when he was unable to explain the reason for all the gnomes in the office.
