Years in IT—
My first mainframe job—
I joined USAA right in the midst of what they called their “Long Range Systems Plan” whereby USAA was developing large application and infrastructure systems to support its P&C company. I was dropped right in and trained by technical experts in the company to develop the IMS Transaction/Application manager software for all USAA applications. 32 years later, this software is still one of the most valuable software assets we have.
My favorite mainframe memory—
I have several favorites. Everything from developing the ISPF Dialog Manager tools for our programmers development environment, to the crisis-mode it seemed the world was in to handle the “Change of Century.” My most recent tale revolves building the infrastructure to support calling distributed tier web services from System z applications and then building the infrastructure for supporting web services provided on System z.
