Announcing the 2017 Master the Mainframe Winners

Learn who won the intense three-part competition, and what was included in each competition component.

4/12/2018 10:26:05 AM | After 17,000 students from across the globe participated in the 2017 Master the Mainframe competition, IBM announced the contest’s top three global winners last month.

The winners of this year’s competition were:

  • Anna McKee, University of North Texas, United States
  • Murilo Andrade, Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Brazil
  • Sebastian Wind, University of Leipzig, Germany
Sponsored by the IBM Z Academic Initiative, Master the Mainframe is a three-part contest designed to give high school and college students a chance to gain hands-on experience in a real-world enterprise computing environment. As they work their way through each part of the competition, students are taught fundamental skills they can use to jumpstart a career in the mainframe.

The first part of the competition is designed to help students become familiar with basic mainframe concepts and data structures, and provides step-by-step instructions for completing challenges. Part two then teaches students to program, develop and experience operating systems by exposing them to challenges on IBM Z. The final part tests students with real-world scenarios that experienced mainframe system programmers might encounter. All three stages include prizes for the top subset of finishers.

In addition to three global winners, nine regional winners were also selected:

  • Brendan Early, UT High School, United States
  • Tring Chu, Nagoya University, Japan
  • Hiroyuki Fuchiue, RWTH Aachen University, Japan
  • Diego DeFranco, FATEC Rubens Lara, Brazil
  • Christian Ziegler, Hochschule Coburg, Germany
  • David Ntekim-Rex, University of Lagos, Nigeria
  • Salisu Ali, Bayero University Kano, Nigeria
  • Prince Dey, RCC Institute of Information Technology, India
  • Dinesh Poudel, Tribhuwan University, Nepal
The full list of finishers is available at the Master the Mainframe Wall of Fame.
