My first mainframe job—
I was hired out of college to work at Rocket Software as a software developer writing various applications on IBM z. My first assignment was a VSAM access method library in Metal C to extend the range of Metal C applications which we could create. From there, I joined the Rocket Cloud API team to write what has become the backbone for cloud-based solutions that we provide.
My favorite mainframe attribute—
The control. Unlike many distributed systems where you get very little knowledge into the inner workings of the environment you develop on, when it comes to the mainframe you can eventually decipher anything that doesn’t initially make sense. If you didn’t know how it worked beforehand, if you investigate deep enough, you will learn something by the end.
