New to z you need to learn a scripting language and that would be REXX. It is basically the same for z/OS and z/VM. It's well worth the time to learn and if you're using z/VM then also learn Pipes

Hi to all,

For all the people who want to know what is a Mainframe, i recommend the next redbook:

Introduction to the New Mainframe: z/OS Basics
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg246366.html?Open

who better than the manufacturer to provide tips and Techniques....

Techdocs Library Technotes & Tips
http://www-03.ibm.com/support/techdocs/atsmastr.nsf/Web/Technotes

And concretly for who are starting with WAS z/OS, a very useful commands of z/OS that permit us to obtain the same results (or betters) that with the Admin console:

I believe many people still are not aware of this or at least the people I deal with. The SRCHFOR edit macro. This really comes in handy when you need to scan all members of a PDS. While in ISPF 3.4, open a PDS and enter SRCHFOR ????. ???? being what you wan to find. You will see FOUND in the PROMPT column. If you place your cursor in under the word PROMPT and hit enter, it will sort and bring all of the members with FOUND to the top of the list. Very handy and saves time.

RE:Take the Dz Tips and Techniques CHALLENGE!
How to get the operating system details of a mainframe?

Answer : Type the following command TSO ISPVCALL STATUS on command line, a lot of other information is also displayed apart from operating system details.

RE:Take the Dz Tips and Techniques CHALLENGE!
Following Mickey Mouse Rexx shows some information about the z/OS environment. You can use the SYSVAR function only in REXX execs that run in the TSO/E address space.

/* REXX */
x = SYSCPUS('CPUS.')
say 'Number of on-line CPUs is ' CPUS.0
do i = 1 to CPUS.0
say 'CPU' i ' has CPU info ' CPUS.i
end
say 'RACF level is:' SYSVAR('SYSLRACF')
say 'DF/HSM level is:' SYSVAR('SYSHSM')
say 'JES2 level is:' SYSVAR('SYSJES')
say 'TSO/E level is:' SYSVAR('SYSTSOE')
say 'RACF status is:' SYSVAR('SYSRACF')
exit
