Join the Enterprise COBOL Vnext Managed Beta Program

More than 50 years after it was first introduced to the programming world, COBOL is still the most dominant language for running business-critical applications. A majority of the 90 percent of business transactions processed by COBOL run on IBM System z hardware. Therefore, it’s a strategic programming language on the mainframe, and IBM is investing in developing new technology to bring more value to COBOL customers.

IBM is currently working on a new Enterprise COBOL for z/OS compiler. The intent in modernizing the Enterprise COBOL infrastructure is to incorporate leading-edge optimization and code-generation technology to Enterprise COBOL for z/OS, improve the delivery of z/Architecture exploitation, and continue to improve capabilities for modernizing business critical applications and creating new applications.

To that end, IBM has announced a Managed Beta Program for this next version of IBM Enterprise COBOL for z/OS. Interested clients are encouraged to submit their nominations to participate in this program. For IBM customers and partners, the benefits of participating in this beta include:
  • An opportunity to influence the product and future product direction
  • The ability to test code and documentation, and ensure compatibility in their environments
  • Free education, code and documentation during the beta
  • Free support by development during the beta for questions and problems
  • Competitive advantage by having access to the latest technology
In addition, tool vendors will be able to develop support for the new COBOL product, so that the essential related tools will be available at or near the general availability.

The beta program consists of four separate sessions, and the next group of participants will be selected in late June. To be chosen, nominees must be current COBOL on System z clients or business partners who are interested in seeing and providing feedback on the latest COBOL compiler.

To access the online nomination form, clients must use their IBM user ID and password. A Nomination Review Board will evaluate applications weekly and select participants. Questions concerning the beta program, the nomination process or completing the nomination form, should be directed to Marie Bradford, program manager, at mabrad@us.ibm.com.
