With the annual outbreak of back-to-school sales upon us, students will soon be returning to class. For scholars of the mainframe, it’s also a good time to consider the 2012 IBM Destination z Enterprise Computing Scholarship
Last year, West Texas A&M University student Vance Morris won the scholarship program’s top honor, the Greg Zaubi Memorial Scholarship
, totaling $2,500. All told, 12 honorees were chosen from 29 applicants, both numbers were record highs for the program. Not only the quantity, but also the quality of applicants was notable.
“We’ve never had a stronger field of applicants. It was fantastic to see so many qualified students from so many excellent mainframe programs coming forward for this scholarship,” said IBM Academic Initiative System z Advisor Mike Todd, who oversees the scholarship fund.
The scholarships have had a profound affect on students as well. As Morris explained, “… this award came at the most opportune time. The impact is huge. I was worried that I would need to get a part-time job this semester, but now I can relax and focus on a strong finish.”
Students who attend U.S. post-secondary schools
that are members of both the Academic Initiative and Destination z are eligible to apply for the 2012 scholarship, starting in October. Applicants must demonstrate excellence in their enterprise computing coursework and plans for continued growth on the mainframe platform in their academic and professional careers. The 2012 scholarship winners will be announced in December. Stay tuned for further details in the coming months.
Ultimately, generous donations make the scholarship possible. So far, this year’s sponsors include IBM and PKWARE. To learn more about donating via PayPal or by check, out our scholarship page
