IBM Announces z13 Mainframe

Today, IBM announces the next generation of mainframe, the IBM z13, which focuses on enterprises’ social, mobile, cloud, big data and analytics, and security needs. The new mainframe is designed to address current and future workloads.

The z13 features up to 141 of the industry’s fastest commercial microprocessors built on 22-nanometer technology, 40 percent total capacity improvement over zEC12 and up to 10 TB available memory. With the new system, some of the new and enhanced offerings include enterprise-ready mobile apps, DB2 BLU, IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator, InfoSphere Big Insight, Enterprise Cloud System, SPSS, Cognos and BlueMix offerings, among others.

Other announcements include:

  1. The 2015 Mainframe Mobile App Throwdown, where contestants can submit an idea for a new or updated mobile app that uses the mainframe. Read how winner of the first throwdown, healthcare company Aetna, built an app to interact with CICS application serving middleware running on System z servers.
  2. The IBM z Systems Job Connector, enhancing the current mainframe job board with improved functionality and resources. Read more about it.
  3. A second Master the Mainframe World Championship in spring 2016. The top winners of the 2014 and 2015 country-level Master the Mainframe contests will be invited to participate. Also, new country contests including Japan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia, as well as a large Pan Africa contest. All contests this year will run on the new z13 platform.   4. A z Systems movie and design video.
  5. The launch of MainframeInsights.com, a site for information, news releases, blogs and events of interest to the IBM mainframe community.
